The first time I had heard of LATCH was when I attended a breastfeeding seminar at The Medical City. That was in 2009 and I was pregnant with my firstborn. I remember very vividly when they introduced themselves and said they breastfeed because it is God-given and it is the best possible gift they can give to their babies. Hearing this gave me no other option but to decide to breastfeed. I didn’t give myself an alternative.
You see, I did not have an easy time conceiving. It took a fair bit of doctor’s consultation, fertility exams, and work-ups for me to be pregnant. And even then, as I eagerly awaited to take the pregnancy test each month, I remember promising to God that should He bless me with a baby, I would do all I can to give my best to the baby, no matter what it took. So when I eventually gave birth, even though breastfeeding was challenging, I did not give myself an escape route. I took it, every ounce of sacrifice, because it was a promise I made to Him.
Fast forward to 2 years after, in October of 2011, while I was pregnant with my second child, I signed up and got certified to be a peer counselor of LATCH. Since then, it has been such a blessing being with like-minded people who want nothing else but to pay it forward. The zest, the enthusiasm, and the passion, it was all very contagious.
There were many projects we’ve had to work on together, from Dr. Jack Newman to the Ondoy and Yolanda calamities to the annual mall shows. Yes, they were all very tiring (and to think other people did a whole LOT more than I did!) but I wouldn’t have chosen another set of people to do it with. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.
Now it’s time to recruit another set of moms willing to commit time, energy, and talent to the advocacy. It’s about paying it forward! There are more moms needing support and we need all the help we can get.
